Key Details

As our Legal Executive, you will oversee and support litigation and enforcement matters on behalf of PPL PRS, mostly in the areas of debt recovery and copyright infringement.

You will provide support to our internal team of case handlers to review and progress their cases, as well as taking responsibility for managing our panel of litigation firms to ensure that the case pipeline progresses effectively. You will also work closely with senior management and key stakeholders to brief them on cases and seek their input on litigation strategy.

You will provide commercially focused and pragmatic legal advice and drafting, as well as driving continuous improvement and optimisation. You will also support our wider internal team with queries about litigation, assist with responding to complex complaints, and support with broader strategic projects from time to time. 


What you will be doing

  • Be our subject matter expert on litigation, advising on options in relation to disputes with licensees/users, management of disputes, the issue of proceedings and enforcement options.
  • Provide day-to-day legal guidance and support to our internal case handlers on litigation matters, to ensure that cases are comprehensively reviewed prior to placement and effectively managed following placement.
  • Take responsibility for managing our panel of litigation firms to ensure that the case pipeline progresses effectively.
  • Oversee the organisation's litigation pipeline from pre-action through to enforcement.
  • Support the development and implementation of litigation strategies that maximise recoveries while effectively managing legal and commercial risk.
  • Attend (and support case handlers to attend) hearings, mediations, settlement meetings and conferences with external advisers or counsel, as required, and support the preparation of witnesses and evidence.
  • Monitor panel law firm spend, challenge costs where appropriate and ensure that instructions remain proportionate to the value, complexity and strategic importance of each matter.
  • Provide information to senior management and key stakeholders regarding our case pipeline and escalate complex or strategically important cases as appropriate. Running our working group and strategy sessions.
  • Identify and implement improvements to litigation processes, precedents, workflows, reporting and instructions to external legal providers, including appropriate use of technology and automation.
  • Provide clear, pragmatic and commercially focused legal advice to stakeholders across the business.
  • Build strong relationships with internal teams and key stakeholders to provide legal support and influence decision making.
  • Maintain and develop legal precedents, policies and governance documentation.
  • Monitor developments in relevant legislation and case law, ensuring the business remains compliant and informed of emerging legal risks.
  • Actively engage in knowledge sharing within the department, across the company and its shareholders.
  • Support our internal teams with queries about litigation and support with complex complaints where necessary.
  • Contribute to strategic projects and wider business initiatives requiring legal input.


You will have

  • A Chartered Legal Executive qualification (or equivalent).
  • At least 2 years of demonstrable civil litigation experience gained post qualification within a law firm or in-house, including experience of debt recovery.
  • Strong knowledge of the Civil Procedure Rules, litigation strategy, procedural requirements, limitation periods, enforcement processes and dispute resolution.
  • Experience of managing external legal providers and delivering value through effective panel management.
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation and legal analysis skills.
  • Strong commercial awareness with the ability to balance legal risk against business objectives.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence and build credibility at all levels.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities within a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong Microsoft Office and other IT skills.
  • Desirable: Knowledge of intellectual property infringement matters.

  • Strong interest in music industry and/or copyright.
